The Internet has made it possible for remote workers to travel the world and still have access to the corporate network, from virtually any place in the world. Your authorized employees, partners or trusted clients can use a SonicWALL SSL VPN to securely plug into your network from home, on the road, or even from the top of a remote mountain retreat. It doesn't matter, as long as there's Internet access and a Web browser available.
The beauty of SSL VPN is that it does not require a "fat" client to be installed on each remote workstation. This allows for a much greater level of flexibility and a much broader level of access. Using a standard Web browser, remote users launch a personalized Web portal for access to e-mail, files, applications and internal Web sites (Intranet). However, there are some applications where a fat client may bring some advantages and IPSec may be used especially in areas where there are only a smaller number of remote workstations that are tightly controlled and managed by the IT administrator. The advantage of the client-based VPN system is that a greater level of access can be allowed. Now, users can have the best of both worlds with SonicWALL NetExtender technology.
The personalized portal serves two purposes; first, it displays only those assets that each user is authorized to access based on corporate policy and second, it provides an easy to use interface to make the end-user experience simple and straightforward.
The SonicWALL SSL VPN provides access to virtually any application, providing remote end users with the broadest level of access of any SSL VPN solution. Many corporations already publish applications via Citrix servers or Microsoft Terminal servers within the corporate network. The SonicWALL SSL VPN extends access to these applications beyond the corporate network to remote users.
SonicWALL SSL VPN RDP and VNC bookmarks provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional remote control and access products. Using these types of bookmarks in the Web portal, remote users gain access and full remote control of their desktop at the corporate office, without having to have a full installation of separate client software.
File shares give remote users a secure Web interface to Microsoft File Shares, through the Common Internet File System (CIFS) or Server Message Block (SMB) protocols. File Shares has an interface that is similar to Microsoft's Network Neighborhood and My Network Places interface. It permits users that have the appropriate authorization to browse through network shares and rename, delete, retrieve and upload files and to create bookmarks for later use.
The SonicWALL SSL VPN appliance's Web-based administrative interface, as well as the end-user portal (Virtual Office), has context-sensitive help throughout so that users and administrators can get help when they need it, in real time. Help icons and context-sensitive Help buttons increase usability. The help icons link directly to relevant sections of the online administrator guide, which is centrally hosted by SonicWALL.
Regardless of whether you choose a SonicWALL gateway appliance or a third-party firewall, remote access is as easy as can be. Because the SSL VPN appliance operates separate from the firewall function, the SonicWALL SSL VPN series is compatible with virtually any firewall on the market. And unlike other VPN solutions, there is no "fat" client requirement for the workstation. The remote worker only needs to have a standard Web browser connected to the Internet; from there, they simply log into their personalized SSL VPN Web portal to gain access to e-mail, files, applications, or internal Web sites.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) works by creating encrypted tunnels through the Internet, allowing remote users to establish a connection to headquarters without having to deploy a costly private line solution. In an SSL VPN, these tunnels are stateless—they can be created in real time and they last only for the duration of the connection.
The SSL VPN Web management portal is simple to deploy and manage. The easy-to-use GUI makes configuration, monitoring and updating the appliance and user policies easy and straightforward. In addition, the administrator can take advantage of the granular policy configuration capabilities to gain complete control over user access to resources.
The concept of the SSL VPN is to allow remote users to gain access to the network from any location. But all users are different. Traveling executives may need access to sensitive corporate data, while at the same time, you may wish to allow a partner access to the VPN, but want to restrict that partner's access to only viewing an inventory database. SonicWALL SSL VPN appliances work at the application layer and therefore allow you to lock down each remote user to specific applications and resources, to prevent unauthorized access and to make sure that those users have access to only what is allowed by corporate policy.
The SonicWALL SSL VPN appliance can be deployed with virtually any firewall successfully. But when deployed with a SonicWALL network security appliance, you get enhanced layered security and deep packet inspection technology, to fully inspect all traffic for content-based threats such as viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware and other malicious threats.
One of the many enhanced features found in SonicWALL SSL VPN is end-user authentication, which is provided through an internal database or through integration with one of many dynamic authentication methods, including Vasco, RSA, Active Directory, RADIUS and LDAP. In addition, all appliances offer tokenless two factor authentication as part of the standard feature set.
